Water Slides

Bethpage

Water SlidesBethpage calls itself a Camp Resort. That is a pretty true description – it is hard to think of staying there as camping – it is more like staying in your camper at a resort.

We had the chance to stay at Bethpage Camp Resort in Urbanna Virginia recently. It was a really fun place to visit. The main feature is a brand new water park. This water park was among the nicest we have seen at any campground, even topping Cherry Hill and Jellystone Caledonia. You could easily spend a day just hanging out by the pool, riding water slides, and swimming. If the water park isn’t your thing, you can also fish, crab, ride their boat, or participate in the planned activities. At the far end of the campground, away from the main action, is a really nice ice cream store and miniature golf course.

Most of the campsites aren’t fancy. There are paved roads. Between the roads are wide grassy areas to park campers. They offer full hookups. The sites are level but not distinctly marked or labeled. You are expertly guided to your site, which helps ensure you park in the right spot. There are some picnic tables but not enough for every site. When we arrived, it had been raining pretty heavily, which made the grassy site pretty wet with some muddy areas. You can upgrade to a premium site which is paved and has a patio, picnic table, and fire ring.

If I had to describe Bethpage in one word it would be ‘busy’. There is an almost constant stream of golf cart traffic. Since there are no sidewalks along the main road, this makes walking or bicycling feel a little dangerous. While this is a fun place to visit, it isn’t as quiet or relaxing as a state park. There are also many full-time trailers in the park; maybe as many as 50 percent of the spots are permanent. The area does have nice river views and has nice shade trees. However, staying here doesn’t really feel like camping.

We liked Bethpage enough that we plan to go back again soon. The water park is just that good and it makes for a fun weekend.

What do you look for in a campground? Do you like the fun of a water park? Or, do you prefer a more natural setting like a State or National Park? Share your thoughts by posting a comment.
