Mount Pleasant Charleston KOA Review
The Mount Pleasant Charleston KOA is a good camping option for visiting Charleston SC and the surrounding area. We found it to be a great home base for our visit to Charleston.
Mount Pleasant Charleston KOA Overview
We wanted to visit Charleston, SC. With historic charm, beaches, and plenty of attractions, Charleston seemed like it would be a great vacation spot. This KOA campground located in nearby Mount Pleasant was the ideal spot to stay during our visit.
You can check out all of the great things we did during our Charleston visit in our post Three Fun Days in Charleston. A few highlights include walking around historic downtown Charleston, visiting Fort Sumter and Fort Moultrie, walking on Sullivan’s Island Beach, and checking out the 400-year-old Angel Oak.
The KOA campground was nice and had a ton of amenities and activities. The Mount Pleasant/Charleston KOA is designated as KOA Holiday. That is the middle of three designations: Journey, Holiday, and Resort. A KOA Holiday will have at least some sites with a brick patio, some deluxe cabins, and group meeting facilities. KOA Holiday campgrounds are geared toward staying a few days end enjoying the campground rather than having just an overnight stop.
Mount Pleasant is located across the bridge from Charleston. It is a growing community. Within a short drive of the campground were many grocery and retail stores so you’ll find it easy to get anything you need during your stay.
This was a clean and quiet campground. We’d recommend it for your visit.

Mount Pleasant Charleston KOA Activities
Mount Pleasant/Charleston KOA is a large campground and has some nice amenities. They have a swimming pool.
There is a playground, splash pad, community fire pit.
They also rent canoes and kayaks for some time on the water. They have trike rentals in case you’d like to pedal around the campground.
One of our favorite parts of this KOA was the nice disc golf course.
There is a one-mile hiking trail. Part of the trail is along the lake and you may have the opportunity to see some interesting birds.
The camp store is decent and is stocked with all the basics. Another interesting feature is the community room. It can be rented out for groups. There was a well stocked kitchen they called the Kamper Kitchen to help prepare food for your group.
We haven’t seen this before but they had an on-demand ice machine. For $2, the machine will dispense eight pounds of ice into a bag.
Mount Pleasant Charleston KOA Sites
There are a number of ways to stay at the Mount Pleasant Charleston KOA. There are over 130 RV campsites including a variety of different pull through and back in campsites are spread throughout property. Additionally, there are tent sites and cabins.
Deluxe patio sites are available. Some are pull-through sites and some are back-in. They included a paved patio with a table & chairs, a rocking chair, and a nice campfire ring.
We had a deluxe pull-through site on the end of a row. It had an upgraded fire pit, nice chairs, and a picnic table. The site was long enough to easily accommodate our pickup and travel trailer.
A few sites down from us was an interesting buddy site. Two campers could share upgraded amenities with a lake view. Note that these two sites must be booked together.
One area of nine campsites offered a unique setting. These pull-through sites all had views of the lake. Each comes with a swing where you can enjoy the sunset. This area offered more shade than the rest of the campground, too.
Other sites are either full hookup or water & electric. They have a gravel pad, standard picnic table, and fire ring.
There are two groups of cabins. Some have views of the lake.
One interesting way to stay at this KOA is a caboose that is now a camping cabin. With a great lake view, this might be a fun adventure.
Mount Pleasant Charleston KOA Amenities
Cable TV is provided with a basic selection of channels. We had a little trouble with our TV cable and opted to try over the air TV. It worked well and we had a good selection of channels. Wi-fi was available. Despite having the antenna on our site, the signal could have been stronger.
A laundry facility with four top loading washing machines is available. During our visit, the facility was clean.
There are two bathroom facilities. One is on the back of the camp store. Entrances to the men’s and women’s restrooms where a bit narrow. There is a separate, accessible bathroom. At this location, there are are four individual entry showers.
Showers each in a narrow room with a small chair.
There is a second bathhouse facility closer to the main group of camping cabins. This facility appears a bit newer.
It has combined shower and bathroom facilities with individual entry doors.
Mount Pleasant Charleston KOA Directions
Accessing the Mount Pleasant Charleston KOA is pretty easy. The address is 3157 N Highway 17, Mount Pleasant, SC 29466.
According to their web site, the directions are: “From junction I-526E & US 17N: go 5 miles north, look for our yellow KOA sign on the right..”
We think it would be easiest to approach from Charleston, heading North. That would make it a right turn. Trying to make a left on this busy road might be tricky. However, there is a nearby stoplight that leads to a road into the campground.
Once at the campground, there is a gated entry. You’ll be given the access code upon check in.
