Rocky Mountain National Park
Rocky Mountain National Park is an amazing place. Every national park has something that makes it special. Rocky is about high elevation.
On a recent visit to the park, I camped at the Moraine Park Campground. At an elevation of 8,160 feet, this is pretty high. Though the park’s highest elevation is over 12,000 feet. Views of the mountains from the campground were fantastic. If you are a tent camper and don’t mind being in bear country, this would be heaven. Many of the sites were perfectly set up for a tent and car. However, our 22 foot truck plus 26 foot camper combination was among the larger rigs in the campground. I had to park the truck beside the camper, angled into the site, just to fit.
Moraine Park offers no electricity, water, cell phone connectivity, wifi or any other modern convenience. If you want to disconnect, this is the place. They did have clean bathrooms and an outside sink to wash dishes.
This is a great hiking park. While the weather didn’t really cooperate, cold and rainy, there was still a lot to see and do. There are multiple visitor’s centers available, each with great ranger talks. I went to one on coyotes and another on squirrels. These are fantastic if you are interested in learning about nature.
The rangers at this park were very impressive. At one point, I was having a conversation about camping in bear country. A ranger magically appeared at the campsite and shared great information about the park and what precautions should be taken. The park was well staffed and rangers were very visible and active.
If you stay in Rocky, make sure to take the drive up to the Alpine Visitors Center. It was pretty cool having lunch while watching it start to snow in July. Just watch your brakes on the way down. You will most likely have to shift into a lower gear to slow things down.
One more thing to consider are the roads leading in and out of the park. These are two lane, very windy roads. Make sure to allow a little extra time.
I had a great time visiting Rocky Mountain National Park and am looking forward to returning again someday soon. Have you been to Rocky? What is your favorite story or place from there? Add a comment below to share.
