Learning to Sail

We love to sail. It was a longtime dream of Erling’s to become a sailor. He wrote a post about learning to sail. Here are a few additional resources that you may find helpful.

The best way possible to learn to sail is to actually go sailing If possible, learn to sail on a small boat. It will likely respond faster which will help you learn faster. The skills you learn on a small boat transfer well to large boat sailing.

If possible, take a course. Community sailing centers are great. There are also a large number of sailing instructors and schools. Judy got keelboat certified a US Sailing instructor. Erling did his bareboat certification through an ASA school. Both programs provided great hands-on training.

One great resource for small boat sailors is The Trailer Sailor. Trailer Sailor is an online forum dedicated to small boat sailors. You’ll find a general forum plus forums specific to a large number of boat brands like Com-Pac and Precision.
